Sometimes when I'm feeling particularly broken I think about that story that claims That the first sign of civilization Was a healed broken bone Because amidst a harsh and hostile environment When any extra burden could be the difference between life or death We became something more We became human Choosing each other over our animal drive for survival And I keep thinking about what that says of us today If the telltale of civilization is that it cares for it's wounded If what makes us human is that we do not leave those in need of help behind It must mean that at some point We became something else again Something worse.
