So it was life all along

I stood looking into the void for way too long
Cause it was everywhere I laid my eyes upon
And it did grow inside me

Nothing more than a fish mimicking the movements of the finger taping on the glass
And calling it survival

I stood looking into the void for way too long
And cried in joy when it looked back
Heard nothing but the echoes of my sorrow
And called them empathy

I stood looking into the void for way too long
I smiled
Old enough to know better than to be hopeful
Grinning teeth dribbling the crimson iron tasted reminder of our mortal nature

It did not smile back
But it feasted on my blood
